OEM O-Ring Sourcing: Standard Sizes, Custom Dimensions, and Material Selection

Quick Answer: An OEM O-ring is a production or replacement seal made to an equipment manufacturer’s specified size, material, and tolerance. CORASEALS supplies OEM O-rings in AS568, ISO 3601, JIS B 2401, and custom profiles in NBR, FKM, EPDM, silicone, HNBR, FEPM, and FFKM. Send the ID, OD, cross section, material, hardness, operating temperature, pressure, medium, drawing, sample photo, and required quantity to request a quote.

What OEM O-Ring Means in Procurement

An OEM O-ring is not one fixed material or size. The term describes a seal produced for an equipment manufacturer or supplied as a matching part for a specific pump, valve, cylinder, engine, or machine. Purchasing teams often search for an OEM O-ring when they have a part number, a sample, a drawing, or a standard dash size.

An OEM O-ring must fit the existing groove and must be compatible with the application fluid. The buyer should confirm the groove dimensions, fluid type, temperature range, pressure, and movement condition before ordering. Confirming these details reduces sizing errors and material failures.

Standard and Custom OEM O-Ring Sizing

OEM O-rings can follow standard inch or metric size systems. Standard sizes are faster to quote because the inside diameter and cross section are defined by a dash number or metric code. Custom O-rings require a drawing or a sample because the inside diameter, outside diameter, and cross section must match the hardware groove.

Common sizing systems for OEM O-rings:

  • AS568: inch-based O-ring sizes with standard cross sections from 0.040 in to 0.275 in
  • ISO 3601-1: metric O-ring sizes with standard cross sections such as 1.78 mm, 2.62 mm, 3.53 mm, 5.33 mm, and 6.99 mm
  • JIS B 2401: Japanese metric O-ring sizes used in many Asian equipment designs
  • Custom molded O-rings: non-standard ID, OD, or cross section made from a customer drawing or sample

For a standard O-ring, state the inside diameter and cross section. The outside diameter is nominal and comes from the inside diameter plus two times the cross section. For a custom O-ring, send the ID, OD, cross section, tolerance, parting line requirement, and groove dimensions if available.

OEM O-Ring Material Selection

O-ring material selection starts with the application fluid and the temperature range. No single material works in every application. The material must resist the fluid, remain flexible at the operating temperature, and maintain hardness and compression set resistance over time.

Material Common OEM Applications Selection Notes
NBR Hydraulic oil, gear oil, water glycol, general industrial equipment Good oil resistance. Not recommended for ozone, strong polar solvents, or very high temperature.
FKM Mineral oil, fuel, chemical process, engine and transmission systems Higher temperature resistance than NBR. Verify performance in steam, amine, and strong alkaline media.
EPDM Water, steam, brake fluids, phosphate ester fluids, outdoor exposure Not suitable for most mineral oil and petroleum fuel systems.
HNBR Hydraulic oil, refrigerant, sour oilfield media, abrasive duty Better abrasion and heat resistance than NBR. Not for all polar solvents.
Silicone Dry heat, static seals, food and medical equipment, low load sealing Low tensile and tear strength. Not generally used for high abrasion dynamic seals.
FEPM Oilfield chemicals, sour gas, acidic media, high temperature service Good chemical resistance. Higher cost than NBR. Not common for general hydraulic service.
