3-A Sanitary Custom Gasket Selection and Sourcing Guide

Quick Answer: A 3-A sanitary custom gasket is a product contact gasket supplied to fit a specific sanitary connection in food, dairy, beverage, or pharmaceutical equipment. The gasket must meet the material, surface finish, cleanability, and documentation requirements in the plant specification. CORASEALS can supply custom 3-A sanitary gaskets in EPDM, FKM, silicone, PTFE, and other compounds when the buyer provides the connection type, dimensions, process conditions, and required documents.

CORASEALS supplies custom cut gaskets and molded gaskets for clamp type sanitary unions, DIN 11851, SMS, RJT, IDF, flange joints, manways, and plate heat exchangers. The right gasket depends on more than the tube size. The profile, groove, material, and cleaning cycle must all be reviewed.

What Is a 3-A Sanitary Gasket?

A 3-A sanitary gasket seals a product contact connection without creating crevices or product traps. The gasket must resist the process fluid and the cleaning chemicals used in clean in place (CIP) or steam in place (SIP) cycles. 3-A Sanitary Standards define the design and material criteria for gaskets used in dairy and food equipment. For rubber and rubber-like materials, 3-A Sanitary Standard 18-03 is a common reference.

Some plants also specify ASME BPE dimensions or FDA compliant materials. A gasket that fits the coupling is not automatically acceptable for 3-A service. The material, surface, and documentation must be checked against the equipment specification. These gaskets are also called sanitary gaskets or food grade gaskets.

Material Selection for 3-A Sanitary Custom Gaskets

The gasket material must remain stable at process temperature and during cleaning. The material must not swell excessively, release particles, or crack after repeated thermal cycles. Compression set and creep resistance are important because the gasket must maintain seal load between cleaning cycles.

MaterialTypical Sanitary UseKey Limitation
EPDMHot water, steam, CIP media, dairy and beverage linesNot suitable for most oil and solvent services
FKMHigh temperature, oils, chemical sanitation, some pharmaceutical mediaHigher cost, not always required for clean steam
SiliconeHigh temperature, clean applications with low mechanical loadLower tear strength, not suitable for many oils
PTFEAggressive chemicals, high purity, low extractable serviceRigid, can creep under load, requires correct groove and load

EPDM is common for hot water, steam, dairy, and beverage service. FKM is used when chemical resistance or high temperature exposure is severe. Silicone is used in some high temperature applications but has lower tear strength. PTFE gaskets offer high chemical resistance but require controlled compression because PTFE is less elastic than rubber.

Custom Sizing and Groove Data

A custom gasket must match the seal area, not only the pipe diameter. For sanitary tube connections, the gasket ID and OD follow the fitting geometry. For plate heat exchangers, the gasket follows the plate profile and usually requires a drawing or sample.

Provide the following dimensions with a custom gasket inquiry:

  • Gasket ID, OD, and thickness or cross section
  • Connection standard or fitting type
  • Groove width and groove depth if available
  • Bolt circle, number of bolts, and flange face detail for flanged joints
  • Drawing, sample, or CAD file

Many sanitary elastomer gaskets are supplied around 70 Shore A. The hardness must match the groove, load, and pressure. A gasket that is too hard may not seal at low load. A gask
